In this evening of beautiful romantic songs, Ester Kosar (mezzo-soprano) and Nigel Foster (piano) are going to perform in England the not so often sung song cycle of Biblical Songs by Antonin Dvořák along with the Hector Berlioz cycle Les nuits d’été .
Both cycles were originally composed for voice and piano and later orchestrated by both composers.
“The Biblical Songs” cycle is a setting of ten songs on a text which was chosen, but hugely amended and influenced by Dvořák himself. They are extracted from the version of the 16th century Czech-language Bible of Kralice. Dvořák was composing the songs while he was grieving and used them as a way of expressing his pain and deep prayers.
The orchestral version of the first five songs was premiered in Prague and on the 19th of March 1896, Dvořák conducted a performance of the first five songs in the Queen’s Hall, London, where the soloist was Katharine Fisk. The cycle has been arranged for other forces, and the second five songs orchestrated, by other composers.
Berlioz ” Les nuits d’été ” is a setting of six poems and was originally for soloist and piano accompaniment. Berlioz orchestrated one of the songs in 1843, and did the same for the other five in 1856. The cycle was neglected for many years, but during the 20th century it became, and has remained, one of the composer’s most popular works. The orchestral version is more frequently performed in concert and on record than the piano original. The theme of the work is the progress of love, from youthful innocence to loss and finally renewal
