George Frederic Handel
George Frederic Handel would undoubtedly be England’s greatest-ever composer but for the unfortunate fact that he was born in Hanover. Yet from the moment the 26 year old sailed up the Thames past the newly completed St Paul’s Cathedral he embraced everything about the country that would become his home till his death in 1759, nearly 50 years later. Drawing on his German roots and Italian influences, he transformed musical life in London. Prolific, driven and a master of wooing wealthy patrons, Handel and his music came to dominate church, court and the stage.
Crucial to his patronage was fellow Hanoverian George Ludwig who moved to London in 1714 to take up the newly united throne as King of Great Britain and Ireland. George I, isolated, unpopular, and barely about to communicate in English, was grateful to his fellow countryman’s visits to Hampton court. While the King had a vicious feud with his son, the future George II, lasting many years, Handel built a lasting friendship with both, securing royal patronage for the rest of his days. In this narrated concert Richmond Opera weaves the story of Handel’s triumphant reign in London with highlights from his great choral works, concertos, operas and – of course – the incomparable Messiah, with full baroque orchestra.
